The fruits of an on-going collaboration, Sculptures in Love with Architecture presents a series of small scale ceramic pieces that reflect the artists thoughts on the forms, concepts, history and humor in architecture and the built environment.

The title references the book Architectures in Love, an enigmatic sketchbook/journal by John Hejduk that has been a shared influence on both artists. Many of the works were conceived with Hejduk's writing in mind, particularly his investigations of the emotional capacities of architecture. From there the circle of allowable inspirations grew to include other architects and artists whom the pair look to: Félix Candela, Eduardo Chillida, Eladio Dieste, Louis Kahn, Mies van der Rohe, and Tony Smith to mention a few. Often, the process of making began with the mailing/emailing of drawings, notes and models back and forth between the artist's studios, at times located in Boston, Chicago or Dallas. The forms that emerged from this method of communication explore and exploit the properties of ceramics - the actual making incorporates the range from elemental technology like hands and sandpaper to advanced prototyping and mold making.

Fireplug, Fabio J Fernández, white stoneware & underglaze, 2010

Fabio J. Fernández Fabio J. Fernández was born in Montevideo, Uruguay (winner of the first World Cup) in 1970 and grew up in Newark, NJ.  In 1992 he received a B.S. in Business from Seton Hall University then went to work for The Prudential Insurance Company - he was fired four months later. After various twists and turns (enriching life experiences) Fernández turned to the Arts and in 2002 earned an M.F.A. in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art.  He lives in Boston where he is an artist/curator. Fernández combs through flea markets and thrift stores in an effort to learn through objects and their respective histories. He curates exhibition (s) at The Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston - a further opportunity to organize ideas through objects. Fernández watches the Antiques Roadshow and studies art history, endeavors that also inform and affect his studio practice. He is interested in looking at and asking questions about architecture and the built environment, always mining these observations and answers for how they might translate to sculptures and drawings. Sculptures in Love with Architecture presents an on-going collaboration with Tom Lauerman that explores the sculptural tendencies of architecture and the architectural potential of sculpture. Fernández has exhibited in the United States and abroad, his work is held in a number of private collections.
