My work explores and questions how objects become valued and what it is that I value. I create work using different processes and materials that sit within the realms of jewellery, product design and photography,
Jewellery Depicted is a series of photography and accompanying jewellery. It is a collection that plays with and questions the traditional inherent material value of jewellery and emphasises the values of concept and story that jewellery can encompass.
Each photograph is a modern day re-interpretation of historical paintings where jewellery is at the centre of the image's meaning. Each of the photographs has accompanying jewellery that act as the key prop for each of the images. Depicted in the photograph the jewellery looks quite "normal" and traditional, yet when the pieces are experienced physically we see there is illusion at work. In the flesh the jewellery is a collection of distorted and hidden half-truths. A ring holds a tiny sapphire stone on the end of a long rod to give the illusion it is much bigger and more valuable when seen from the camera's lens. A gold chain, which in the photograph is seen over-spilling from a box, in reality only has four 18ct gold links the rest is made up of cheap plastic factory produced imitation chain. For the series Jewellery Depicted Part II still uses the principle that the jewellery determines the choice of image to re-interpret but this series have less modern references, which allowed me to have more fun when making the costumes.
The casts of the photographs in both series are also important for the series meaning. With each image I have created a new narrative based loosely on the historical painting I am referencing, but incorporating the identities of real individuals and my personal relationships with them. These people are all artists or makers and are my peers, contemporaries and friends. In Go On Then (below) which is based on The Suitor Accepted by Jean Frederic Schalls 1788, my good friends who are engaged play the roles of the lady and her suitor.
